SIRIUS

(46 downloads)

Download this episode (60 min)
SIRIUS is not one composition, but two. One made by Emanuel Pimenta, in Ticino, Switzerland, and another one created by Jon Rappoport, in California, United States. The composers did not knew what the other was working on, following the principle of independence established by Antonin Artaud in the beginning of the 20th century. SIRIUS is a double star, with mysterious and unpredictable movements. SIRIUS was composed by Jon Rappoport and Emanuel Pimenta in the first semester of 2010.

DANTE - PARADISE

(10 downloads)

Download this episode (10 min)
Based on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, DANTE is an electronic opera by Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta. It is the first opera on the Alighieri's Divine Comedy in the history of music. The first electronic opera made by Pimenta knew its world première in 1984, at MASP Assis Chateaubriand Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, with libretto by Décio Pignatari and stage design by Fernando Zarif. Entirely composed by Emanuel Pimenta, DANTE is a sixty minutes play. The opera has different outputs: the opera itself, a movie, a book and visual artworks. DANTE required intense research which took more than five years to acomplish, between 2003 and 2008. Strongly based on Dante Alighieri's masterwork, the opera is structured on three movements - hell, purgatory and paradise - and the integral piece is composed by sixty sectors of one minute each. Each minute is a circle of Dante's travel in the afterlife. The last set of Cantos of Dante Alighieri's magnificent work was intentionally condensed. Thus, hell has twenty sections, or twenty minutes; purgatory, nine sections; and paradise thirty-one sections. In this opera there are no judgments of value. All structural elements of hell, purgatory and paradise are constructed after the two fundamental laws of thermodynamics: aggregation and desegregation. Singers and actors in this opera are real personages, but already died, virtual ones. Except for some moments with the appearance of Caruso or Maria Callas, for example, the singing part is made up of voices of historical personages creating a new kind of sprechgesang. DANTE is a continuous exercise of discovery. Its musical structure is based on several micro compositions that form a complex network of multiple and unexpected relations.

2007 Kepler's Vestiges

(11 downloads)

Download this episode (10 min)
The concert Kepler's Vestiges was composed in 2007 and it is dedicated to the cellist Audrey Riley, friend of the composer. The structure of the piece was based on visual information from NASA's Chandra X-ray Obervatory on the youngest supernova remnants in our galaxy. Johannes Kepler, who lived between 1571 and 1630, before the telescope, was surprised by the strange presence of that supernova. The musical piece is devoted to interpreter's creativity and freedom. Divided in ten sections of one minute, the piece covers all tessitura of the instrument. Each sector of one minute is a complete piece. Kepler's Vestiges ask for a total intgration between the musician and the instrument, as if they were in a different world
This recording is of Audrey Riley's performance of Kepler's Vestiges at the medieval church of S. Maria, in Trancoso, Portugal, in 2007

2007 Ghed

(9 downloads)

Download this episode (11 min)
Ghed is dedicated to the Italian musician Maurizio Barbetti, also great friend of the composer. It is a piece oriented to his refinement, to his sensitivity, in Emanuel Pimenta's words. The Indo European root *ghed meant "to catch", and it is related to the inner sense of this piece. It is a challenge to the performer to catch all potentiality of it, through the expansion of his own potentiality. The music score was based on a graphical analysis of the centre of the Milk Way.
In this recording, Maurizio Barbetti performs Ghed, as its world première, at the medieval church of S. Maria, in Trancoso, Portugal, in 2007

2006 Erdos X

(10 downloads)

Download this episode (15 min)
Paul Erdös (March 26, 1913 – September 20, 1996) was a great Hungarian mathematician. His friends created the erdos number as a humorous tribute. Erdos alone was assigned the erdos number 0, while his immediate collaborators could claim an erdos number 1, their collaborators have erdos number at most 2, and so on… I took the names of many erdös numbers and used them as the base for the composition. Those letters designed the music transformed and prepared for new transformations. A music not coined by intention, by literary logic. Erdos X is a celebration of the principle of collaboration and friendship. The composer Sandor Fekete-Kiss performed its world première at the Symmetry Festival in Budapest, Hungary
